What records should you check?

Review A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and NS records relevant to the domain. Different names may publish different records, so an apex-domain check is a starting point rather than a complete zone inventory.

What can cause inconsistent answers?

Caching, split-horizon DNS, provider propagation, delegation mistakes, DNSSEC validation, and geographically distributed answers can produce different observations.

How does monitoring help?
